Wikipedia is open!

We recently shared with you the news that the Constitutional Court has ruled that the access barrier to Wikipediais a violation of freedom of expression. Fortunately, it was expected and the platform, which has been closed to use in our country since April 29, 2017, was opened at the end of 2.5 years. Last May, Wikipedia reported Turkey to the European Court of Human Rights.

The Wikimedia Foundation, which appealed to the ECHR, said the barrier on the site violated the right to freedom of expression. Reviewing the application, the General Assembly of the Constitutional Court ruled that blocking access to the entire site was a violation of freedom of expression. The infringement was voted 6-10 by a vote of 10 members. As a reminder, Wikipedia was denied access by the Information Technology and Communications Authority (BTK) on April 29, 2017. The Constitutional Court, which ruled by a majority that the ban violates freedom of expression, asked the magistrate to lift the ban, which ruled that the access barrier was blocked.

The Constitutional Court’s decision on Wikipedia was also published in the Official Gazette.

Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales tweeted, “Welcome back to Turkey!” accompanied by a photo taken in Istanbul.

After the Decision of the Constitutional Court, the Information Technology and Communications Authority reopened Wikipedia. We can say that the removal of the Wikipedia barrier, which we have accessed in different ways for 2.5 years, has been one of the most gratifying developments in recent years.

You can now access Wikipedia at wikipedia.org. Finally, let’s not forget: “Welcome back, Wikipedia!”
