Instagram is preparing to launch its new video format, Reels, which will appear in Stories. Reels, consisting of 15-second videos with music, actually stands out as a copy of TikTok’s video format.
Instagram began testing Reels in Brazil and was first spotted by Jane Manchun Wong in September. In Reels format, users are offered video editing tools and a large music catalog to create a 15-second video.
Together with this new new set, Instagram is preparing to compete with TikTok, which has achieved significant growth and momentum in China and around the world. Given the recent US approach to Chinese technology companies, it is fair to say that the timing of Instagram’s Reels is wise.
Similarly, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently criticized TikTok for freedom of expression. Moreover, at a time when TikTok is having trouble adding new US users to the platform, Instagram may play a role in the Chinese social networking giant.
While instagram’s copy of TikTok is on the agenda, Instagram Director Adam Mosseri has not denied these claims. If you recall, Instagram, which has copied many of Snapchat’s features in recent years, especially the Stories format, has never denied copying the format. It looks like i’m not going to be able to Instagram will always owe its rise to other apps.
